There have been a number of incidents of protests and objections against the release of the movies before. But perhaps not as huge as the recent Sanjay Leela Bhansali produced and directed one, Padmavati. Starring, Dipika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor, the film is about the fictional account of Alauddin Khilji attacking the Chittor Fort as he had heard about the beauty Padmavati, the wife of Maharana Raval Ratan Singh. The movie was based on the poem of Malik Muhammad Jayasi.
Beginning with Vandalism:
Since the beginning of the shooting for the movie, protests started from the Karni Sena of Rajasthan, as they vandalized the sets of the film. This Bhansali was shooting in Rajasthan. After the first trailer of the film was out, the protest intensified regarding a dance sequence of the queen herself. Also, there is a “dream sequence” of Khilji and Padmavati. This the karni Sena demands is in the movie. That is in spite of the director’s complete assurance that no such thing is in the movie.
Further Outbreak of Anger:
The film, after the trailer release, is not facing high outbreaks of rage and protests and so are the cast members. Bounties have been announced for the head of Bhansali and Dipika Padukone. At this time, the Karni Sena chief Lokendra Singh Kalvi also made a threat of maiming Dipika. A part of the cinema lovers was expecting the release of the film on 1st of December, the complications are making it uncertain. This is whether the film will be released on that date at all. On the other hand, chief ministers of the states like Rajasthan, Punjab, Himachal and Uttar Pradesh are talking about banning the film. It has subject linked with public sentiments.
The Other Side:
Today, in one facebook news channel the Karni Sena chief Lokendra Singh Kalvi commented. He said that it was a comment by Ranveer Singh before the shoot that he would do two notches beyond the playing of the role of villain if he gets two intimate scenes with the lead female character that started all the issues. As per Kalvi, the makers of the movie were not ready to offer any explanation to Singh’s remark. That is in spite of repeated requests from the Sena. This infuriated them and the present is the result of that.
Kalvi also claims that there was Rani Padmini in real as is claimed by the rest of the followers of his group. It is hard to say now if it is a clash between faith and reality or a clash of ego between the two parties. Whatever the reasons are, it can be said beyond doubt that the future of this film has a great uncertainty ahead.
